U.S. Faces 30-Year High for Pedestrian Deaths

Pedestrian safety has been a rising concern in recent years, but, unfortunately, statistics say 2018, (the year for which we have the most recent data), hit a 30-year high. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,283 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents in 2018, which makes it the highest year for fatalities in the past 3 decades.

Why Are Pedestrian Fatalities On the Rise?

This startling data begs the question—why are pedestrian deaths increasing? Several major cities in the United States, including New York and Los Angeles, have adopted safety initiatives in an effort to reduce, and eventually eliminate preventable pedestrian traffic fatalities. The New York initiative, in particular, shows promising results, yet the data tells us fatalities have spiked.

According to a recent article in the New York Times, population growth, lack of pedestrian walkways in suburban areas, and an increased risk of driver distraction may be the key contributing factors.

Common Reasons for Pedestrian Traffic Accidents

Pedestrian traffic accidents can occur anytime, anywhere, but data tells us that there are a few common causes that make up the bulk of pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Some of the most common reasons for pedestrian traffic accidents include:

  • Back-up accidents
  • Crosswalk-related problems
  • Distracted driving
  • Driver intoxication
  • Left-hand turns
  • Pedestrian distraction
  • Poor weather
  • Speeding

Alcohol use has an enormous impact on pedestrian traffic fatalities. In fact, the NHTSA says that alcohol use affected either the pedestrian or the driver in a whopping 47% of all reported pedestrian traffic fatalities in 2017. We also know that pedestrian traffic accidents occur most often in urban areas, at night, and in summer months.
